FINRA's latest short-interest file (positions as of September 15) shows the typical S&P 500 stock would take 3.9 days of normal trading to cover its short positions. Total S&P 500 short interest is down 7% over about three months. The most heavily shorted by days to cover: T. Rowe Price, Snap-on, Union Pacific. By sector, Utilities is the most shorted and Information Technology the least.
