Morning brief, Wednesday October 7: futures point lower

Before Wednesday's open, S&P 500, Dow and Russell 2000 futures are slightly lower and Nasdaq-100 futures are lower. Yesterday's session: Stocks closed higher yesterday. The S&P 500 rose 0.5%, the Nasdaq-100 gained 0.5%, the Dow gained 0.5% and the Russell 2000 slipped 0.7%. That leaves the S&P 500 up 1.2% this week and up 15.1% for the year. Gains were broad - 340 of 502 S&P 500 stocks rose. Utilities (+3.0%) and consumer discretionary (+1.2%) led, while health care (-0.2%) and communication services (0.0%) lagged. In the latest readings, the 10-year Treasury yield is 5.3% (up 3 basis points), the VIX is at 15.5 and oil is $96.2 a barrel. Macro headlines centred on bond yields and oil.
