Morning brief, Thursday October 8: futures little changed

Before Thursday's open, S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Dow and Russell 2000 futures are little changed. Reporting today: PepsiCo (before the open). Yesterday's session: Stocks closed modestly lower yesterday. The S&P 500 fell 0.2%, the Nasdaq-100 lost 0.3%, the Dow lost 0.7% and the Russell 2000 slipped 1.3%. That leaves the S&P 500 up 1.0% this week and up 14.9% for the year. Losses were broad - 364 of 502 S&P 500 stocks fell. Health care (+1.0%) and utilities (0.0%) led, while industrials (-2.2%) and materials (-1.5%) lagged. Treasury yields eased - the 10-year Treasury yield is 5.3% (down 4 basis points), the VIX is at 15.0 (-0.5) and oil is $96.2 a barrel. Macro headlines centred on the Fed and bond yields.
