"vs usual day" compares the move with the stock's average daily move (up or down) over the past year. "Where it stands" is the distance from the 52-week high and the position against the 200-day average. Stocks with a one-day change over 60% (usually a spin-off or split) are left out.
What this means
- Supermicro (SMCI) fell 9.6%. That is about 2 times its usual daily move. It was not alone: computer hardware stocks fell 6.2% on average (Seagate Technology -7.5%, Western Digital -7.3%, Everpure -7.0%), after Barron's reported “Seagate and Western Digital Stocks Have Tanked on Toshiba Fears. Wells Fargo Is Still Bullish”1. The company announced a leadership change in an SEC filing that day. It is part of the AI build-out trade, and the AI-infrastructure stocks Torvanta tracks fell 4.3% on average, the day Yahoo Finance reported “Hewlett Packard Enterprise Falls 5% as AI Financing Worries Extend Hardware Selloff; Super Micro Sinks 7%, Dell Drops 3%”2.
- Flex Ltd. (FLEX) fell 8.2%. That is about 3 times its usual daily move. It was not alone: electronic manufacturing services stocks fell 1.6% on average (Jabil -3.1%, TE Connectivity -0.2%).
- Palo Alto Networks (PANW) fell 7.7% as Investor's Business Daily reported “Sell-Off In Cybersecurity Stocks Intensifies Amid Palo Alto Vulnerability”3. That is about 3 times its usual daily move. It was not alone: software stocks fell 4.4% on average (CrowdStrike -7.1%, Fortinet -7.0%, ServiceNow -4.4%). It is one of the past year's 50 best S&P 500 performers (+85.6% this year), a group that sold off today as investors took profits.
- Palantir Technologies (PLTR) fell 7.6%. That is about 3 times its usual daily move. It was not alone: software stocks fell 2.4% on average (Datadog -7.2%, Oracle -4.6%, Workday -2.9%). It also moved with the AI-infrastructure group.
- Seagate Technology (STX) fell 7.5% as Barron's reported “Seagate and Western Digital Stocks Have Tanked on Toshiba Fears. Wells Fargo Is Still Bullish”1. That is about 2 times its usual daily move. It moved with the rest of the computer hardware group (see Supermicro above). It is one of the past year's 50 best S&P 500 performers (+132.8% this year), part of the same profit-taking.
- A big one-day move tells you what the market learned that day, not where the stock goes next: large moves partly reverse about as often as they continue.
